Department of Transportation releases greenhouse gas study
April 22, 2010
More News & Resources:
The Department of Transportation has released a study suggesting a number of strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation. "Transportation's Role in Reducing U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions" identifies options such as using low-carbon fuels, increasing vehicle fuel economy, improving system efficiency and reducing travel that involves high levels of carbon emissions.
“Reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change is one of the great challenges of our time,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Transportation is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gases, and the transportation sector must be a big part of the solution. This report provides valuable information that will help us in our effort to protect the environment.”

Cost And Efficiency In Reducing GHG Emissions
January 21, 2010
More News & Resources:
The preliminary findings of the International Transport Forum's look at the cost and efficiency of reducing transport GHG emissions suggests there is much that
can be achieved within the transport sector at low cost.
"Reducing Transport GHG Emissions: Opportunities And Costs -- Preliminary Findings" finds government policy-makers can avoid unnecessary costs if climate-change mitigation is focused on the most cost-effective actions.
Among those cost-effective actions are adoption of low-carbon fuels, improvements in engine technology, better traffic management, improved land‐use planning and promotion of high quality public transport.
Taxation as a motivational tool will play a significant role. As an example, the report says fuel efficiency standards accompanied by appropriate fuel…

Public transportation offers a low-emissions alternative to driving, and investments in transit and compact land use have important synergies that enhance greenhouse gas reductions when pursued as a comprehensive strategy. Transit agencies across the U.S. are not only providing low-emission transportation alternatives to their customers, but are also reducing greenhouse gas emissions within their own footprint. A panel of experts from federal government, local government and academia will discuss exciting efforts in the…
