In Pursuit Of Equitable Transportation Policy
The Transportation for America statement of principle is clear: "Transportation is a crucial link to ensuring opportunity for all—connecting us to jobs, schools, housing, healthcare, and grocery stores. But millions of poor people and people of color live in communities where quality transportation options are unaffordable, unreliable, or nonexistent."
Changing that reality is the ambition of the new Equity Caucus at Transportation for America.
"Expanded transportation choices will serve to strengthen and connect communities and increase access for people of all incomes to economic opportunities, unlocking regional potential and boosting global competitieveness of our local economies," said Reconnecting America President and CEO John Robert Smith in announcing Reconnecting America's participation in the caucus.
The Equity Caucus was formed by the nation’s leading civil rights, community development, racial justice, economic justice, faith-based, health, housing, labor, environmental justice, tribal and transportation organizations.
The caucus calls on Congress to ensure the next surface transportation authorization is driven by the following principles and priorities:
- Create affordable transportation options for all people.
- Ensure fair access to quality jobs, workforce development, and contracting opportunities in the transportation industry.
- Promote healthy, safe, and inclusive communities.
- Invest equitably and focus on results.
