A 2011 report from the Mineta Transportation Institute on how rising transportation costs affect low-income families has been added to the Resource Center best practices database. "Getting Around When You’re Just Getting By: The Travel Behavior and Transportation Expenditures of Low-Income Adults" uses in-depth interviews with 73 adults to determine travel behavior and transportation spending patterns; the costs and benefits of alternative modes of travel; cost management strategies; and opinions about the effects of changing transportation prices on travel behavior.

A 2007 memo from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Facilities Planning Services to the Fairfax County Department of Planning & Zoning Zoning Evaluation Division has been added the Resource Center best practices database. This document shows how density affects planning for new students and new schools in Fairfax County, VA. Specifically, the document shows the specific ratios of students that will be generated by a new dense development. This is an example that cities and school districts can follow when discussing higher density housing additions to the community, and the expenses that result.
Danbury Branch Improvement Program Transit Oriented Development

The Connecticut Department of Transportation's 2010 evaluation of transit-oriented development (TOD) opportunities within the Danbury Branch study corridor has been added to the Research Center's best practices database. The report, developed in conjunction with South Western Regional Planning Agency, intended as a tool for municipalities to use as they move forward with their TOD efforts.
Research Explores Train Vs. Bus Preferences

An April 2012 article from the Journal of Public Transportation entitled "Bus or Rail: An Approach to Explain the Psychological Rail Factor" has been added to the Research Center best practices database. The article by Milena Scherer of ETH Zurich and Katrin Dziekan of the Berlin Institute of Technology explores whether there is an inherent preference for fixed rail transit among transit riders and why. The research found a preference for using rail, assuming equal service conditions, of 63 percent for regional train and 75 percent for trams compared to bus services. The rail factor is highly loaded with emotional and social attributions, the researchers note, and account for 20–50 percent of the share in the different schemata for bus, rail, and tram.
