TOD MarketPlace 2009

Reconnecting America sponsors annual conference connecting cities and developers to make transit-oriented development work

Reconnecting America is co-sponsoring the fourth annual "TOD MarketPlace 2009: Connecting Cities and Developers Making Transit-Oriented Development Work" on Sept. 24, 2009, in San Jose.

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) San Francisco describes the conference as the culmination of hundreds of hours of technical assistance donated by ULI real estate and land use experts to five Bay Area cities: Cloverdale, Antioch, San Jose, Oakland, and Menlo Park.

In addition to Reconnecting America and the Urban Land Institute San Francisco, the other organizers involved in the conference include the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California(NPH) and the Greenbelt Alliance.

Christopher B. Leinberger of the Brookings Institution will give the keynote speech: "TOD: Stimulus and Reauthorization, a path to recovery and long-term sustainability."

ULI panelists at the MarketPlace will unveil recommendations on how to leverage millions of dollars of transit investments to produce viable housing and commercial development around transit stations. The day also includes “How-To TOD” workshops on local success stories and ends with a walking tour of downtown San Jose’s transit mall.

Among the panelists will be Dena Belzer, TOD MarketPlace Co-Chair and president of Strategic Economics. Strategic Economics is a partner with Reconnecting America in the Center for Transit-Oriented Development.

Belzer will speak on financing TOD. Her workshop will look at the $10 billion to be invested in transit in the region over the next decade and discuss how funds will be spent, who controls the funds and how to access the funds.

Nadine Fogarty, another Strategic Economics representative, will participate in the Cloverdale: SMART TOD feedback panel during which the city will present 10 minutes on Cloverdale's TOD plans and opportunity sites and developers will provide advice on feasibility.
