Nelson\Nygaard was retained by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy to update and augment the Pedestrian Section in their Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide. The work was funded by the Hewlett Foundation and the Global Environment Facility and builds on a previous guide prepared by the German Technical Assistance Agency (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit).
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provided grant support to municipalities and regional organizations across the country through the Sustainable Communities Initiative. In addition to funds geared toward creating more sustainable and connected regions, grantees were eligible for capacity building and technical assistance from national organizations.
The decision to construct and operate Central Link light rail at-grade on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South created widespread community concern about the impact that prolonged construction would have on local businesses. As a result, the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund (CDF) was founded in 2002 to manage a $50 million fund established by the City of Seattle, King County, and Sound Transit. The Fund was established to mitigate lost revenues of the businesses impacted by light rail construction and to invest in long-term business and real estate development in the Rainier Valley.
To minimize the impact of the five-year construction project, the CDF created the Supplemental Mitigation Assistance (SMA) program in an effort to prevent business closures and vacant storefronts along the MLK corridor. This study gives technical information on the possibility of using aerial ropeways (which includes aerial trams and gondolas) and discusses alternatives such as buses and streetcars.
As TOD planning processes proliferate there is a broader understanding that mixed-income housing supports many TOD goals including stable transit ridership, better public health, broadened access to opportunities, and deeper affordability. This Mixed-Income TOD Action Guide was developed for the nonprofit Great Communities Collaborative (GCC), which is working in the San Francisco Bay Area to ensure TOD planning processes result in neighborhoods that include households of all income levels. The guide “walks” users through a three-step analysis to determine the most effective strategies and tools.
Modern light rail and streetcar vehicles are fundamentally very similar, the differences having largely to do with how they are applied. The primary difference between the two modes is the degree of integration into the urban environment and the scale of the associated infrastructure. This difference in application makes some common light rail vehicle design features unnecessary for streetcar application but may also require the use of other features that may or may not be incorporated into a typical light rail vehicle.
